Looking for evidence of alien life in the 20th Century Fox movie Prometheus, part of the studio's content deal with Google.
The 20th Century Fox movie studio announced it will sell and rent movies through Google Play and YouTube, offering a new crop of films to people who cancel their cable subscriptions.
For so-called "cord cutters," leaving behind cable means navigating a plethora of online video services, all with a patchy selection of films, sometimes requiring different playback devices, and offering a different selection of services. Google's video offerings, Google Play and YouTube, offer movies for sale and rent on Google TV and various Android devices, including tablets.
With the addition of Fox, Google's entertainment platforms now offer video from all sixmajor movie studios for sale or rent, supplementing a limited selection of movie streams from non-Google subscription services like Netflix and Hulu Plus. As Google put it in a statement, "This new partnership expands our movies and TV shows catalog and, most importantly, gives consumers the opportunity to rent or own some of the best new releases and classic films ever made."
Cord-cutters who have traded HBO and Showtime for Google Play can now buy films like "Planet of the Apes," "Black Swan," and, three weeks before it's available on DVD, the Ridley Scott sci-fi thriller "Prometheus." Of course, they're still missing out on a full menu of cable TV coverage including, for example, Fox News' coverage of the political convention and very recent episodes of The Simpsons. But their options have grown incrementally yet again, making expensive old-school cable plans just a bit less compelling a proposition.
