In the future there might be no need to sit in a deer blind for hours, freezing and bored.
Instead, all you'll have to do is walk out your front door, launch your drone, pop a cold one and wait for it to shoot dinner.
That's the idea proposed by Bailey Hurt, whose "Critter Gitter" concept landed on our desks a little while ago as part of the Found contest, which challenges Wired readers to imagine devices of the future.
"It's all very tongue-in-cheek," admits Hurt, an art director who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. "But at the same time I'm trying to use that humor to get people to think about the larger implications of drones and guns."
Hurt says he has nothing against guns or drones and the project is not meant to offend hunters. But he says the "Critter Gitter" is definitely a comment on gun culture and the heightened use of drones in the war in Afghanistan. He says that the absurdity of the "Critter Gitter" is supposed to make people step back and think more broadly about what all this new technology means.
"I think gun culture and drones both bring up important philosophical and moral issues," he says.
In addition to asking some important questions, the project caught our eye because of the design work Hurt put into it. Using Photoshop and StrataVision he built an example of what he thought the controller might look like as well as the cover of a fake magazine that he cleverly titled "Drone & Ammo." Just like most magazines his cover is filled with headlines. But instead of advertising the newest drone models, his headlines raise serious questions about issues like collateral damage and cluster bombs.
"It's meant to be way over the top," he says.
Hurt says he has no plans to start producing hunting drones, even though DIY drones are on the rise. Nor does he expect anyone else to make something similar anytime soon. But he says he'd never rule it out.
"What we've constantly seen is that if it can be done, it will be done," he says. "And the hunting drone is sort of like a solution waiting for a problem."
