Just in time for iOS 6, Twitter has updated its iOS offering to include more robust, photo-filled profile pages for users plus a completely rebuilt iPad app.
While the redesigns don't really change the core Twitter experience very much, they do serve to unify things across Twitter's multiple platforms. The app now offers things like the Discover tab for finding top trending topics, stories, and favorited tweets, and the Interactions section of the Connect tab so you can see who has mentioned or retweeted you.
Perhaps the most notable addition to the Twitter experience is the new Facebook and Path-like header photo. You can add your own image or use one of Twitter's pre-designed offerings. Also on the profile redesign is the addition of your photo stream, shown below your most recent tweets. On the iPad, in particular, this is a nice way to get a sense of a user and to utilize that extra screen real estate in an aesthetically pleasing way.
The iPad app also features a nifty 3D animated cube transition when you switch from one account to another. It basically puts each profile on one face of a cube that rotates so that the account you've chosen faces you. That sort of animation has the potential for some serious cheese, but it's implemented very well.
The iOS app update introduces at least one fairly unwelcome change, in line with Twitter's recent policy changes: Users can now host images only through Twitter, instead of through third-party services like TwitPic or yFrog. And in landscape mode, the app doesn't take advantage of the wider interface: It keeps your tweet streams the same width as in portrait mode and just adds some gray space on either side.
Twitter implemented other features like push notifications for specific users in a July update to its apps.
