Everyone is good at something. Geoffrey Countryman is good at playing saxophone and amazing at changing into and out of Star Wars costumes, and now he has a world record to prove it.
According to RecordSetter — the Wikipedia of world records — Countryman's 13 sci-fi switcheroos set the high mark for most Star Wars costume changes in a one-take music video. In the clip, set to the song "Everything Changes" by Countryman's band Eytan and the Embassy, the sax player goes from Luke to Leia to Darth Vader to stormtrooper (thanks to a hooded sweatshirt from Marc Ecko's line).
Yes, 13 changes were all he needed to do to set the (totally made-up) record.
"I wouldn't be surprised if someone has worn more Star Wars costumes in a video," Countryman said in an e-mail to Wired. "But I think the fact that we didn't cut away or edit any of it — a true single take — put us over the top."
The video is actually a remake of the band's previous costume-changing clip for "Everything Changes," which got rave reviews from deadmau5 and Neil Patrick Harris. It also got half a million views on YouTube (see the original video below).
As silly as the concept sounds — even if it is in line with RecordSetter's everyone-deserves-a-record ethos — Countryman said he made the video out of a genuine love of the Star Wars franchise. He's a lifelong fan who made sure to put in as many smart, true-fan references as possible: The characters are all holding the correct color lightsabers, the cracker he is fed in his Ewok suit is a reference to Leia's first meeting with Wicket Wystri Warrick, etc.
"Han Solo definitely shoots first [and] the finger trap is reference to Admiral Ackbar's famous line, 'It's a trap!'" Countryman said. "Lastly, and though it's not direct to the movie, I made sure to throw in the Colt 45 reference for all the fans of Billy Dee Williams out there."
With Star Wars fandom being a constantly growing and changing thing, never short of people ready to remix something or do a new tribute video, it seems highly likely that someone could swing in and beat Countryman's record at any time. So why not shoot for a few more costume changes than just 13?
"We couldn't really think of any other characters that were essential to the Star Wars universe," he said. "Or maybe Marc Ecko really needs to design some more Star Wars hoodies!"
